Acromegaly is a rare hormonal disorder that develops when the pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone after the growth plates have closed. This condition is almost always caused by benign (noncancerous) tumors in the pituitary gland. Acromegaly is distinct from gigantism, which occurs when excess growth hormone is produced during childhood before the growth plates close.
